You are welcome here.

Founded in 1986, Journalists for Conservation merged with the Environmental Writers of Australia to form "Environmental Writers and Journalists of Australia".  Whilst EWA is our Australian division, we partner with like-minded organizations around the world, including the Society of Environmental Journalists (USA), and the Oxford Climate Journalism Network (UK).

ABOUT EWA

Our Mission

Open to people of any nationality, our mission is to foster a community of storytellers who are  committed to raising awareness of environmental issues in Australia and beyond.

Through collaborative engagement, educational initiatives, and a shared passion for advocacy, we aim to inform public discourse, influence policy, and inspire action.

It's our part to ensure all people can enjoy the natural beauty of Australia - now and forever.

EWA IS THE HOME FOR AUSTRALIAN STORIES

Amplifying Australian voices

Our members tell the stories  of Australia, giving voice to our priceless landscapes, ecosystems, and natural resources.

Our members cover news, public interest, editorial, film, radio, television, and online media.

Truth telling

In an age of misinformation, journalistic integrity is more important than ever. EWA promotes journalistic ethics and credibility, committing to truth, transparency, accuracy, and fairness in our members and the stories they tell.

A community for storytellers

Building a supportive network of environmental journalists, providing resources, opportunities, and a collaborative platform.

Our events celebrate the diverse voices, perspectives, and ecosystems within Australia, reflecting the rich tapestry of our natural and human landscapes.

'Change Makers: The Global Race to Save Our Seas'

Starring Ted Danson, Rashid Sumaila, Daniel Pauly, Justin Alger, William McDonald

After 20 years of negotiating, the World Trade Organization has finally drafted a historic agreement to protect our oceans: The world's first legally-binding international sustainability treaty.

But if countries don't sign on, the deal will be meaningless.

The race is now on to convince 109 countries to sign the agreement, or watch our last, best hope for a sustainable future slip away.

RECENT PROJECTS

Film: 'It's Good Business'

In 1990’s Mexico, many believed rampant deforestation was simply the cost of doing business. But one man saw an alternative and launched what would become the most successful biodiversity program in history. That man is Dr. José Sarukhán and the program is CONABIO, The National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity.

TELLING STORIES THAT MATTER

Australian journalists and writers play an important role in helping Australia deal with environmental crises and natural disasters.

They serve as intermediaries, translating the complex science of climate change and ecological conservation into accessible narratives.

They bring to light the stories of communities affected by environmental degradation, often highlighting the urgent need for policy change and sustainable practices.

They celebrate the unique biodiversity of Australia, advocating for the protection of its distinctive ecosystems, from the Great Barrier Reef to the ancient rainforests of the Blue Mountains, to the sacred sites of our First Nations people.

"In a time of increasing environmental challenges, Australian environmental storytellers are not just informing the public—they are shaping the country's environmental conscience and future."
